Sober Main Square Public space project Sober, Ribeira Sacra, Galicia

This project began with a won ideas competition for the reorganisation of the main public space in Sober, a municipality in the heart of the Ribeira Sacra wine region. Following the competition win, the full project design and construction supervision were carried out through to completion.

The proposal was structured in phases to ensure economic viability and offer flexibility to the local authorities in its delivery. The design is built around four fundamental ideas that define the character of the place: earth, wine, water and green. These are not abstract concepts, they translate directly into programme and spatial decisions.

New circulation routes are drawn so as not to divide or fragment the central space, keeping it open for popular events and celebrations, including the well-known Sober Wine Fair. A vegetated area defines the green zone, and a children's play area completes the programme.

The project is executed in just three materials: red clay brick, tinted concrete in reddish tones and natural granite, materials deeply rooted in the Galician landscape and constructive tradition, evoking the earth and wines of the Ribeira Sacra.
