SD House Loft conversion, full-width rear extension and full refurbishment in South Woodford, London
This project transformed a family home in South Woodford through a loft conversion, a full-width rear extension and a complete internal refurbishment, significantly increasing both the floor area and the quality of the living spaces.
The planning strategy was key to the project's success. Both the loft conversion and the rear extension were pursued through separate applications, submitted in a carefully considered sequence. A combined application would have placed the loft outside local policy compliance, by separating the two consents, both were approved.
The rear extension created a new open-plan kitchen and dining area, connecting the front and rear rooms for the first time and opening the ground floor into a continuous living space. Rooflights bring natural light deep into the extension, ensuring the new open-plan area is well lit throughout the day. A dedicated play area for the children was incorporated into the design. A new entrance porch was added to the front, and both the front and rear facades were fully re-clad, grey slates replacing the original red roof tiles, with black detailing carried through the loft and façade elements.
The loft conversion added a new level to the house, with a new staircase integrated into the existing layout. A rooflight positioned above the staircase draws natural light down through the full height of the house. The family bathroom was refurbished in deep blue, while the new loft en-suite was finished in salmon and gold, two distinct interior palettes that give each space its own character.
Externally, a new garden was designed including a garden shed and home office. The same considered approach to materials and detail carried through from the interior to the outdoor spaces.
